3 Characters Raisin in the Sun (David Kim)

In the movie, Walter wanted to go into a business in with his friends. The whole family is against Walter’s plans for the liquor store, but later Mama give Walter some money so he can invest in the liquor store he was talking about. Later, Walter finds out that one of his friends ran away with the money, which destroys Walter’s dream. Walter gets very upset about the fact that the money is gone.

Travis wants 50 cents in the beginning of the movie. He goes to his mother for the money, but Ruth says no, implying that she doesn’t have that kind of money. When Walter sees this, he gives Travis a whole dollar, which is more than what Travis expected to get. Also, Travis gets his own room after they get a new house.

Mama wishes the family were happy, but couldn’t reach the wish because Walter was struggling, trying to start a business with his friends, which the whole family was against. Mama later gets a house for the whole family, and she becomes very happy in the end.

I think that the ending of the movie suggests that the possibilities of getting ahead involves varieties of factors, and is very hard to achieve. It requires money, luck, and desire. Money is one of the most important thing, displayed by the movie, because the society runs with money. Luck is definitely required, because if someone was unlucky like Walter, they would not be able to reach their goal, and even worse things can happen. Lastly, desire is very important, because without desire, someone would not care about what would happen about or with their dream.

1. Beneatha didn’t want to be a doctor anymore because she started to believe that she couldn’t help anyone.
2. Asagai defined “realists” as people who see mankind as going around in a circle getting nowhere, and “idealists” as people who see the changes that take place in the world.
3. Asagai asks Beneatha to go back to Africa and live with him in his own home.
4. Mama finds that they are not going to move to a new house, and blames the fault on herself.
5. Walter has a solution to take money from Linder so that they wouldn’t move in to the new house, then the whites in the town will be happy.
6. Walter didn’t take the money Linder offered, because he believes his family is a proud family, and if he took the money, the society would look at their family as weak.
7. The metaphorical significance that the plant has for the Youngers is that the plant represents hope and happiness, which is very similar to the Youngers, since the youngers grow hand have hope to become great people, like how the plants will become greater plants.

Voice of My Best Friend (David Kim)

I was riding with my home boy “D,” to go to Jack in the box to get some burgers, since we were so hungry. When I was about to turn my car into the parking spot, this white dude drove up and took my spot, along with making a huge dent in my front bumper. He made a dent in my precious car! I was so mad I could’ve crushed a walnut with my hands. That white man got out of the car and pretended that nothing happened. It was messed up. I got out of the car and started cussing at him and get out my anger. He just looked at me and walked into Jack in the box. I went up to him and punched him in the back of the head with my brass knuckles. An employee called the police. I booked it before the police came.

1. Walter asked Ruth what was wrong with her, because Travis was asking Ruth for 50 cents, but Ruth told Travis that she didn’t have that kind of money. So, Walter aksed what was wrong with her and gave Travis a dollar.

2. Ruth was upset when Walter gave Travis the money, because she wanted to save as much money as possible.

3. Willy and Bobo are Walter’s business friends.

4. Because Ruth always ignored Walter’s comments and conversations by saying “Eat your eggs”. Also, Walter is tired of eating eggs everyday.

7. Beneatha said she wouldn’t marry George, because he is too “Shallow”

9. At the end of Act 1 Scene 1, Ruth faints

Our Racist, Sexist Selves (David Kim)

1. The author thought that he was a racist, because the time it took for him to shoot an armed black person was longer the time it took for him to shoot an armed white person.

2. This test does measure unconscious, because I have to react to the pictures  by looking at the person and deciding whether the person is holding a gun or not. There is a mixture of races, which made it hard to predict whether the next picture was going to be a black person or not. Therefore, in  order to find out whether I am racist or not, I would be shooting the race much faster than the other race.

3. The author thinks that sexism is harder to fight than racism, because when we look at someone, we first think of their gender. If the person is a women, we cannot forget the fact that they are women, but we can meet them and forget what their race is.

4. The quote is saying that we might be sexist in a way but we might not know about it. Because we think that women are nice, and open, which makes us think that they are not suitable for leading a nation or a big company. Many people think that women are too soft to become leaders.

5. The problem that women face is that they cannot be strong and tough and be soft and kind at the same time. This is why people think that women are not meant to be people who are leading a group of people who are going through struggles, and they should only take care of their own families.

6.  This problem, according to the author, can be confronted by changing teachers. Research shows that students who are exposed to a larger number of female professors experience a reduction in gender stereotypes.

2-part: DSP + Race (David Kim)

Part 1

This digital project was a very good experience for me, because there were so many skills that could be used outside of the class. For example, teamwork is a very useful skill that will be useful in the future. I think that this project was a very good experience for me and it was very enjoyable. I think that the final product that my group made was very good, but I think there could be some changes to make our project a much better piece. We can find more pictures to put in our movie so that the audience isn’t looking at the same picture for a long period of time. Also, the recordings and transitions could be a little smoother from the beginning to the end. If we got more time for this project, my group would have done a much better job in all aspects of the product. If I were to do this project again in the future with new group members, I would try to get as much pictures as possible so that we would not run out of sources when we put together the final product.

Part 2

My experience with race is that there are so many diversities in the US. When I lived in Korea, I didn’t experience so much differnece in race, because people who lived in the city were 99.9% Koreans. When I immigrated to the US, I experienced a very different culture and race around the community. I realized that the community is a lot more open that other communities, because the US is a melting pot of all races and cultures. Since there are so many different cultures and races, the US made the rules so that everyone feels comfortable and that all cultures and religions can do what they wish to do without breaking any laws. When I think of conflicts between races, I think of the conflicts between white people and black people, because it was one of the major issues in the past American history, and there still are many conflicts going on today that involves black and white people. I think that in the future, there will still be some conflicts between races, because most people tend to “hang” around people who are similar as them, which is most likely the color of their skin and the similar languages they speak or the country where they are from.

Story Proposal (David Kim)

In Eastern California, a boy named Tyrone lived in the ghetto with his parents. He went to a public high school, and had tons of friends, but all of his friends were also from the ghetto. Because he was so used to living in the ghetto, Tyrone decided to join a gang. This gang was not just an ordinary gang. It was a territorial gang that had owned most of the territories of Eastern California. Tyrone seems to enjoy being a part of the gang, but a lot of the times, he gets abused, because he is one of the lower rank members of the gang. About a month later, he has received a task from the gang leader, and it was mandatory for him to do the task, because if he didn’t do the task, he would either get shot to death by the leader of the gang, or just get kicked out of the gang. Tyrone didn’t want any trouble, so he decided to do the task. The task was to collect $90,000. He kept thinking about where in the world he can get that much money. One day, he figured that the only possible way of getting $90,000 was to steal from his father, who works at a nationwide banking company. His father has keys to the vault in a local bank. Tyrone steals it when his father is asleep. He takes it back to the gang members to recruit a group for a bank robbery. The following weekend, Tyrone and his group decide to break into the bank at night and take as much as they can.

Other gangs around the city hear about this, and start to rage upon Tyrone’s gang. All the gangs in Eastern California started gang battles. One day, Tyrone’s house gets shot at by a rival gang with a drive-by. Tyrone’s only loving brother gets shot and dies in the front yard. Tyrone decides to move out of the house, alone, and decides to write songs and make albums. He later becomes a famous and well-respected rap artist.

Power Quotations (David Kim)

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.” Jimi Hendrix

I believe that this quote is a very powerful quote, and can relate to everyone in the world. If someone had the power of love, he would have peace, and he wouldn’t want nothing more but love. There are tons of things that people have desires for, but most of them would probably want love than anything else, because it is part of human nature, and it is one of the great desires that many people have. Jimi Hendrix’s quote is saying that when the power of love is to overtakes the love of power, and everyone in the world were to be affected by the power of love, there would be no worries of peace in the world, because people would already have their desires filled by love.

Love is a very powerful thing that can change anyone’s life, and can sometimes make someone go crazy for love. I think the quote explains how power in the world can be overtaken. Love is what people need, but they don’t realize it and try to fill up their needs by doing things such as smoking, drinking, drugs, buying things they want, doing whatever makes them happy. These are some things that make the world lack peace. People need to realize that their absolute need is love, and nothing else other than love, because lack of love is what is making them feel empty and lonely. They sometimes lack the sense of presence when they do not have love. People should learn this quote by Jimi Hendrix and use it to make the world a better and peaceful place.

Life of Pi (David Kim)

I think that Life of Pi is an appropriate book for a whole class to read, because I already know that honors English classes have read this book as a class. I have many friends at school who are currently taking honors English 10, and they told me that Life of Pi was a good book, although the first half of the book was really boring. I agree with my friends about this book being a good book, but I think that there could be adjustments or improvements that could be made, which would make this a masterpiece novel. As I started reading part two, the story became a lot more interesting than I thought I would, although the transition from “Part One” to “Part Two” was not as smooth as it can be.

“Part one” of this book had Pi, the main character, talking about his religion, morals, life, beliefs, and his thoughts and opinions on various things. For example, when he says “Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and the supply of food low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured,” he is mixing his knowledge of zoology and his morals/beliefs to explain the hierarchy of an environment. This makes it seem like the book is about Pi’s personal beliefs, his opinions, and his thoughts. I think it would have been much better if the book showed more interesting stories or experiences that Pi goes through, because the reader will sooner or later get tired of all the writings about Pi’s religion or his life.

The main character, Pi, is not really interacting with the human environment a lot. “Yet there will always be animals that seek to escape from zoos. Animals that are kept in unsuitable enclosures are the most obvious example.” The setting is more like him interacting with the animal environment and the zoo environment. It seems like he has a very private and silent life. It would have been much more interesting even if he only interacted and got in physical contact with the animals in the zoos, rather than talking about animals and their characteristics.

As part two starts, Pi starts to interact with the human society a lot more, and the book talks a lot more about his current issues, and what Pi is going through, right at that moment. “The sun shone, rain fell, winds blew, currents flowed, the sea built up hills, the sea dug up valleys – the Tsimtsum did not care. It moved with the slow, massive confidence of a continent.” This shows how Pi is explaining his surroundings by using poem-like sentences. There is much more life to the second part of this book, which gives the readers the fresh sense of being in the exact setting of the book.

In my opinion, Life of Pi is a great book to read as a whole class, because there are so many things to learn from this book, and the plot and story is very interesting. If part one of this book was to be modified and improved, it would be a much better book than it is.

The Dumbing of America (David Kim)

1. The author is saying that people who play Xbox or use Facebook often cannot concentrate as well as people who read in tree houses. “But the inability to concentrate for long periods of time — as distinct from brief reading hits for information on the Web — seems to me intimately related to the inability of the public to remember even recent news events.”

2. The author shows the percentage of people who read novels or poems for pleasure. In 1982, the percentage was 82%, two decades later, only 67%.

3. Jacob believes that new technology has caused dumbness.

4. When the author says “anti-intellectualism.” she means something that is against education, and something that is not done for any type of education.

5. The erosion of general knowledge is losing the ability to concentrate and focus on a certain topic.

6. The second to last paragraph is saying that people are more desperate than the people form the past, and that public speakers talk in a faster rate than the public speakers form the past.

7. I believe that she is right, because I have personal experiences with using Xbox or Facebook or other things that get be off focus of my school work. There will never be times when I am doing these things at the same time as doing my school work.
